The Legend of Sloan's Lake
Local legend holds that Thomas Sloan accidentally created the lake in 1861 by leaving a well pump running overnight, flooding a depression in the plains. The historical accuracy is debated, but the story endures.

Sloan's Lake became a popular recreation destination. A lakeside amusement park operated in the early 1900s, with boat rentals and weekend festivities drawing Denver families.
