Consumption Lounges
Denver has licensed consumption lounges where you can legally consume cannabis on-site. These establishments operate under Initiative 300, which allows businesses to apply for social-consumption permits. Lounges typically charge a membership fee ($5-20) or event admission.
Popular consumption experiences include cannabis-paired dinners, art classes, yoga sessions, and comedy shows. Some lounges are BYOC (bring your own cannabis) while others sell products on-site. Check individual lounge rules before visiting.

Edibles Guide for Beginners
Edibles are the most common way tourists overconsume cannabis. Unlike smoking, edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect and can last 4-8 hours. Follow these rules:
Start Low
Begin with 2.5-5mg THC, especially if you're new to cannabis. Standard serving size is 10mg, which can be too strong for beginners. Many dispensaries sell 2.5mg mints and microdose gummies.
Go Slow
Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. Edibles can take up to 90 minutes to kick in, especially on a full stomach. The most common mistake is "I don't feel anything yet" and taking a second dose.
Eat First
Have a meal before consuming edibles. Taking them on an empty stomach leads to faster, stronger effects that can be overwhelming for newcomers.
Stay Hydrated

Is marijuana legal in Denver, Colorado?
Yes. Recreational marijuana has been legal in Colorado since 2014 (Amendment 64 passed in 2012). Adults 21 and older with a valid government-issued photo ID can purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries. Out-of-state visitors can buy the same amounts as Colorado residents.
How much cannabis can I buy in Denver?
Adults 21+ can purchase up to 1 ounce (28 grams) of flower, or the equivalent in concentrates or edibles, per transaction per day. You can visit multiple dispensaries in a day, but each transaction is limited to 1 ounce. Edibles are sold in packages of up to 100mg THC (10mg per serving).
Where can I consume cannabis in Denver?
Public consumption of cannabis (smoking, vaping, or eating) is illegal in Denver and carries a fine of up to $999. You cannot consume in parks, on sidewalks, in restaurants, or in most hotels. Licensed consumption lounges are the only public places where consumption is allowed. Some hotels and Airbnbs allow consumption — always check their policy first.
Can I bring cannabis to the airport or across state lines?
No. It is illegal to bring cannabis into Denver International Airport (DEN) or across any state line, even to another legal state. TSA follows federal law, under which cannabis remains a Schedule I substance. DEN has "amnesty boxes" near security where you can dispose of cannabis before entering the airport.
Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in Denver?
No. Recreational dispensaries are open to all adults 21+ with a valid photo ID. Medical dispensaries require a Colorado-issued medical marijuana card and offer higher potency products and lower taxes. Most visitors use recreational dispensaries.
