The Story of Union Station
🚂
1881
First Union Station Built
Denver's first Union Station opened in 1881, replacing the scattered depots of competing rail lines. The original building united railroads serving Denver under one roof for the first time.

1914
Current Beaux-Arts Station Completed
The current Union Station building — a grand Beaux-Arts structure designed by Aaron Gove and Thomas Walsh — opened in 1914 after the original was enlarged and remodeled. The iconic 'TRAVEL BY TRAIN' sign was added in 1952.

1930s–1940s
Golden Age of Rail Travel
Union Station served as Denver's gateway to the world during the golden age of rail travel. Celebrities, presidents, and soldiers all passed through its grand hall. At peak, 80 trains a day used the station.

Decline of Rail & Neglect
As airlines and highways replaced rail travel, Union Station fell into decline. The building was designated a landmark but suffered from deferred maintenance and reduced activity for decades.

The $54 Million Renovation
A public-private $54 million renovation transformed Union Station into a world-class transit hub and social destination. The Terminal Bar, boutique hotel, restaurants, and event spaces opened to national acclaim.

A Line to DIA Opens
The University of Colorado A Line commuter rail to Denver International Airport opened in 2016, making Union Station the literal gateway between the city and the world once again.
