Decline and Gentrification Pressure

Like much of inner Denver, Highlands saw population decline, disinvestment, and rising crime — but its beautiful Victorian housing stock attracted a new wave of buyers.

This Highlands Denver Events Guide runs along the blocks from West 38th Avenue on the north to Speer Boulevard on the south, with Federal Boulevard as the western edge. It places coffee, brunch, breweries, a rooftop bar and an evening fire-pit patio on those blocks, and says which buses and parking to plan around. Hours can change, so confirm with the venue before you go.

Where Highlands Sits on the Denver Map

Start at West 38th Avenue, the northern edge. Speer Boulevard marks the south and Federal Boulevard closes the west side. On the east, a Union Pacific Railroad line forms the boundary, and the South Platte River runs along the southeast, according to Highland, Denver.

"Highlands" sometimes refers to two adjacent neighborhoods, Highland and West Highland. The Highland neighborhood association uses I-25 as its easternmost boundary, so its map reaches farther east than the railroad line.

Coffee and Weekend Brunch

Black Eye Coffee sits at 3408 Navajo St, in an industrial-chic café that serves coffee and breakfast and offers takeout. It is closed Monday, open Tuesday through Saturday 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Free street parking is listed, and the café is the earliest opener on the list, tied with Crown Coffee at 7 a.m. The café's site has more.

Kunjani Cafe

La Virgen de Guadalupe, at 1209 W 36th Ave, is an ornate Virgen de Guadalupe surrounded by roses and candles. It is 0.22 mi in a straight line from Black Eye Coffee, which makes it an easy add-on to a coffee stop. It is open Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Bar Dough Patio Highland is a modern-rustic Italian spot that makes wood-fired pizzas and also serves pastas, wine, beer and cocktails. Brunch runs Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and dinner hours are daily 4 p.m.-10 p.m. It has outdoor seating and takes reservations. Free street parking is listed, and the Bar Dough site has more.

Breweries and a Rooftop Bar

Zuni Street Brewing is at 2355 W 29th Ave. It pours craft beers in mostly traditional styles in an ultra-casual setting with food-truck service, which suits a relaxed stop. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Doors open Monday through Thursday 3 p.m.-10 p.m., Friday 2 p.m.-11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon-11 p.m. Parking is free on the street, and the entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible. The Zuni Street site has more.

Zuni Street Brewing Company

Prost Brewing is at 2540 19th St. It brews German-style beers and pours them in a casual room or on a patio with skyline views. Its hours match Zuni Street's. Street parking is free and paid, and the entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible. The Prost site has more.

Highlands Square Rooftop, at West 32nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, is an independent rooftop bar above the shops of Highlands Square. It has intimate mountain views and a rotating tap of Colorado craft beers. It is open Sunday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and closed Monday through Saturday, so it works as a Sunday-morning stop. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.

Evening Fire Pits and Live Music

Forest Room 5 is at 2532 15th St, east of the other stops, so plan a short ride rather than a walk from Lowell Boulevard. The night spot has an artsy, rustic interior and an outdoor area with fire pits and a flowing creek. It is the only place on this list with live music, and it takes reservations. Happy hour runs daily 4 p.m.-7 p.m. It is closed Monday, open Tuesday through Friday 4:30 p.m.-2 a.m., Saturday 3 p.m.-2 a.m. and Sunday 4:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.

Getting There and Parking

Two RTD routes serve Highlands: Bus 32 and Bus 44. Check which one stops nearest your destination before you leave. Street parking is available but limited on weekend evenings, when the buses are the alternative to driving. Black Eye Coffee, Zuni Street Brewing and Bar Dough Patio Highland each list free street parking.

For the streets just east, Lower Highlands has its own events guide, and LoHi & Highlands rooftops and patios covers hours and parking for those spots.

Updated 2026-10-14: rebuilt around the stated boundaries, added venue links with hours, parking and sources, and kept RTD Bus 32 and 44 and the weekend parking limit. ```
