The Baker neighborhood was named for James Baker, a lawyer and judge who arrived in Denver in 1872. It developed as a middle-class streetcar suburb south of downtown.

The South Broadway streetcar connected Baker to downtown, spurring commercial development. Victorian brick storefronts and worker cottages filled the neighborhood.

As suburban strip malls drew commerce away, South Broadway's storefronts emptied. The neighborhood became affordable, attracting counterculture residents and small independent businesses.

Mayan Theater at 110 Broadway — Art Deco landmark that survived South Broadway's decline
Affordable rents attracted antique dealers and vintage shop owners, creating "Antique Row" along South Broadway — one of Denver's most distinctive shopping districts.
Skylark Lounge opened and became the anchor of Baker's underground music scene. Dive bars, indie venues, and the Hi-Dive established South Broadway as Denver's punk and indie corridor.
Craft breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and new development brought investment to Baker. The neighborhood's vintage character and affordability made it one of Denver's most sought-after addresses.
