Washington Park, known as Wash Park, has two lakes, a boathouse and free courts, and its events page lists free, family-friendly events year-round. Three places to eat sit near the park on South Pearl Street and South Broadway, so a day here can start or end with a meal.

Lakes and Park Hours

Washington Park is at 1499 E Louisiana Ave and is open daily 5 a.m.-11 p.m. According to Washington Park Events, it has two lakes, Grasmere and Smith. It also has a boathouse and a dedicated off-leash dog area on the west side. The lakes and the boathouse are the reason to walk it.

Washington Park Lake is at 1073 S Downing St, 0.29 mi in a straight line from the park's Louisiana Avenue address. It is open 24 hours daily, so it is the place to go at the earliest or latest hour. Dogs are allowed, and it is the only place on this list that is good for children. The boathouse reflected in the water is Denver's most classic landscape photo.

Free Courts and Year-Round Events

The park has free tennis, volleyball and croquet courts, per Washington Park Events. Free events for people of all ages run year-round, so a visit can include a game on the courts as well as a walk by the water. The events page lists current dates, so check it before you plan around a particular day.

Boathouse Concerts and Event Planning

The Wash Park Boathouse hosts summer concerts, private events and community gatherings, according to the Washington Park Event Guide from Denver Parks and Recreation. The same guide is the reference for planning an event at the park, including one at the Boathouse.

Places to Eat Before or After

Two of the three stops are on South Pearl Street, and the third is on South Broadway.

Duffeyroll Café is at 1290 S Pearl St and is open Mon-Sat 6 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sun 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Cinnamon rolls are the draw, and the site also lists eggs, soup and sandwiches. It has outdoor seating, and it is the only place on this list that serves dessert.

Leela European Café is at 1476 S Pearl St and is open daily 7 a.m.-4 p.m. It serves coffee drinks and tea in an old home with a front porch and patio; the site has the details. It is the only place on this list with live music.

La Chiva Colombian Fusion is at 1446 S Broadway and is open daily 11 a.m.-10 p.m. It serves hearty Colombian fare, including empanadas, in a dining room run by a mom and pop; the site describes the food. It has outdoor seating and is the only place on this list that takes reservations.

For a full day, start with a cinnamon roll at Duffeyroll, spend the middle of the day at the lakes and courts, and finish with dinner at La Chiva, since Duffeyroll and Leela both close by 4 p.m.

Updated 2026-10-14: removed the unsourced acreage figure and the past event dates; added park, lake and venue hours and addresses with source links; linked the park, the lake and three places to eat.
