Local legend holds that Thomas Sloan accidentally created the lake in 1861 by leaving a well pump running overnight, flooding a depression in the plains. The historical accuracy is debated, but the story endures.
Sloan's Lake became a popular recreation destination. A lakeside amusement park operated in the early 1900s, with boat rentals and weekend festivities drawing Denver families.

The City of Denver purchased Sloan's Lake and surrounding land in 1907, establishing it as a public park. The 177-acre lake became Denver's largest and a year-round community gathering place.
