The Denver Art Museum traces its roots to 1886, when the Denver Artists' Club was formed. The institution grew through the 20th century into one of the largest art museums between Chicago and Los Angeles.
The Colorado State Capitol, with its 24-karat gold dome, was completed in 1894 after 14 years of construction. It anchors the neighborhood's civic identity and is free to tour.

The Civic Center Park and cultural complex were designed in the City Beautiful movement tradition, creating a formal civic space linking the Capitol to the City and County Building.

The DAM's North Building opened in 1971, and the dramatic titanium-clad Frederic C. Hamilton Building (designed by Daniel Libeskind) opened in 2006, transforming the neighborhood's architectural landscape.
The Clyfford Still Museum (2011) and the expanded History Colorado Center (2012) joined the DAM to create one of the most concentrated museum campuses in the American West.
