Tennyson Street was laid out in the 1880s as the commercial spine of northwest Denver's Berkeley neighborhood, named after poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. The street was designed to serve the craftsman bungalow blocks spreading out on both sides.

Tennyson Street filled with family-owned groceries, barbershops, pharmacies, and hardware stores serving craftsman bungalow households. A tight-knit commercial strip that met daily needs within walking distance for northwest Denver families.
Tennyson Street remained a quiet neighborhood commercial strip for decades, largely unchanged while the surrounding residential blocks housed stable working-class Denver families across multiple generations.
Affordable rents attracted independent art galleries, used record stores, and locally-owned restaurants that seeded Tennyson's creative identity. The street began developing a distinctive independent character that set it apart from commercial strips citywide.
Hops & Pie (2011) became a citywide dining destination. Local galleries, boutique clothing shops, and farm-to-table restaurants followed, transforming Tennyson into one of Denver's most celebrated independent commercial streets.
Tennyson Street is now cited as Denver's model for successful neighborhood commercial districts — walkable, independently owned, and deeply community-oriented, despite significant property value increases across Berkeley.
