Lower Highlands sits on bluffs west of the South Platte River, part of the original Highland Town platted in 1859. Its elevation provided views and separation from downtown's flood-prone flats.
LoHi developed as a tight-knit neighborhood of Italian, Mexican, and Irish immigrant families, many working in nearby industries along the Platte River corridor.
Mid-century LoHi was a quiet residential area. By the 1980s, disinvestment and suburban flight had left many Victorian homes neglected and commercial strips vacant.
Artists and young professionals drawn by affordable Victorian homes began renovating LoHi's housing stock, kicking off a slow but steady transformation.
Little Man Ice Cream (2008), Root Down (2008), and a wave of upscale restaurants and rooftop bars turned LoHi into one of Denver's most coveted dining destinations.
The pedestrian Highland Bridge physically and symbolically linked LoHi to downtown — foot traffic increased dramatically and residential values surged.
