View Restaurant Health Scores in Five Points →Five Points runs northeast of downtown Denver along Welton Street, crossed by Champa, Larimer and 27th Streets. This Five Points Denver Events Guide starts with the jazz history and the annual festivals, then covers the October 21 events from the Five Points BID, live music rooms and coffee stops for earlier in the day.
Jazz Heritage, the Rossonian and Annual Festivals
Visit Denver says jazz greats including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis played clubs like the Rossonian, and that the district was known as the "Harlem of the West."
Live jazz is still on the schedule at Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club, 1330 27th St, between Larimer and Walnut. The club's site describes live jazz, and the lounge has two levels, serves plates and cocktails, and takes reservations. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, 5 p.m. to midnight. Parking is free on the street, with valet also available. It suits an evening built around the music.
Two annual events carry the music forward. The Five Points BID events page lists the Five Points Jazz Festival, an annual outdoor jazz festival. Visit Denver lists the Juneteenth Music Festival, an annual celebration of African American culture.
Welton Street Cultural District
Welton Street is the core of the Five Points Historic Cultural District, according to Welton Street. The district has a self-guided walking tour with interpretive markers, so the street can be followed block by block. The same source describes Welton as the commercial, cultural and entertainment heart of Denver's African American community from the 1920s through the 1950s, with more than fifty clubs, hotels, theaters, restaurants and professional offices.
One stop on the street is The Librarian, at 2401 Welton St. It is a giant black-and-white portrait of a Black librarian reading to children, and it celebrates education and literacy, per the Denver Public Library. The entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible, and street parking is free.
October 21 Events from the Five Points BID
Two items fall on October 21, both listed on the Five Points BID events page. The first is a board meeting and public hearing on the proposed 2027 budget and the 2026 budget amendment. The second is a community event, "Welton St Small Businesses," at Spangalang Brewery. Visit Denver names Spangalang among the breweries and taprooms in Five Points. The event is the one to pick for a look at the street's small businesses.
Live Music Venues and Sonny Lawson Park

Marquis, at 2009 Larimer St, is an intimate concert venue for indie rockers, with acts ranging from local bands to nationally touring ones, per its site. Parking is paid, on the street or in a garage.
The Five Points BID events page also describes Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom as a live music venue with a main room and an upstairs venue.
For something outdoors, Westword says Sonny Lawson Park hosts softball, kickball and other sports, and previously hosted Negro League baseball games.
Coffee Stops Before the Music
Both cafés open in the morning and close in the afternoon, so they work as a first stop ahead of an evening show.
Coffee Tree, at 2960 Champa St, is an independent Black-owned café serving Ethiopian single-origin coffees, per its site. It is open Thursday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed Monday through Wednesday. It offers takeout and free street parking.
Proper Grounds Coffee, at 1075 Park Ave W, is a community café that sources from Black-owned farms, according to its site. It is open daily, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and allows dogs. Street parking is free.
The full list is in Coffee shops in Five Points. Coffee Tree is closed Monday through Wednesday, so on those days start at Proper Grounds and head on to Welton Street.
Updated 2026-10-14: removed an unsourced street address and the earlier history, prices and parking claims; added sourced venues for jazz, live music and coffee; merged the festivals into the jazz section.
