Uptown (then called "Capitol Hill North") developed in the 1870s–1880s as Denver's population exploded. Elegant Victorian homes lined the streets between downtown and Capitol Hill.
As Denver's central business district expanded, 17th Avenue developed its restaurant culture, with dining establishments catering to downtown workers and evening diners.
The legendary jazz club El Chapultepec opened at 20th and Market in 1955, hosting jazz greats for over 60 years until its closure in 2020 — a beloved institution that defined Denver's jazz scene.

17th Avenue between Broadway and York cemented its "Restaurant Row" identity, with an ever-denser concentration of dining options making it Denver's go-to destination for a night out.
The Denver Performing Arts Complex expanded its venues, making Uptown the anchor of Denver's performing arts scene and driving pre-show dining to the neighborhood's restaurants.
Uptown embraced Denver's cocktail bar boom — craft cocktail lounges, wine bars, and gastropubs joined the existing Restaurant Row to make 17th Ave Denver's most diverse dining and drinking strip.
