The Town of Highland was platted in 1859 as a separate municipality across the South Platte River from Denver, attracting working-class families and German and Irish immigrants.

Henry Lee House (1880) at 32nd Avenue and Clay Street — Queen Anne Victorian in early Highlands
Denver annexed Highland in 1878. The neighborhood filled with Victorian homes, churches, and small businesses serving the growing city's northwest side.

Highlands remained a stable working-class and middle-class neighborhood for decades, known for its craftsman bungalows and tight-knit Catholic parish communities.
Like much of inner Denver, Highlands saw population decline, disinvestment, and rising crime — but its beautiful Victorian housing stock attracted a new wave of buyers.
Chefs and restaurateurs discovered Highlands' walkable streets, opening award-winning restaurants along 32nd Ave. Williams & Graham, Root Down, and Linger transformed the neighborhood's identity.
The pedestrian and bicycle Highland Bridge opened in 2014, connecting Highlands to Union Station and downtown — fueling a surge in foot traffic and further development.
