The City of Denver established Washington Park in 1899 on marshy land south of downtown. Landscape architect Reinhard Schuetze designed the park with two lakes and formal flower gardens.
Smith Lake (north) was excavated in 1906 as part of the park's formal design. Ferril Lake (south) followed, and the park became Denver's premier green space for outdoor recreation.
Washington Park became the gathering place for Denver families — Sunday picnics, lawn bowling, boating on the lakes, and community events established its beloved identity.
The running and fitness boom of the 1970s transformed Wash Park's 2.6-mile loop into Denver's most popular jogging path, a tradition that continues today with thousands daily.
The blocks surrounding Wash Park became among Denver's most desirable real estate. Craftsman bungalows were renovated and the brunch and cafe culture of the surrounding streets took hold.
The Wash Park Boathouse became a sought-after event venue, and the park now hosts races, outdoor concerts, fitness classes, and community gatherings year-round.
