South Broadway developed as a streetcar commercial corridor connecting Denver's downtown to its southern suburbs. The brick storefronts built in this era still define the neighborhood's character.

Broadway commercial corridor c.1900 — the era when South Broadway was Denver's main south artery
The South Broadway corridor was lined with movie theaters, department stores, and restaurants at its commercial peak. The Oriental Theater (1927) is the most famous survivor of this era.
As malls drew shoppers away, South Broadway's storefronts emptied. Cheap rents attracted fringe businesses — pawn shops, used car lots, and adult entertainment venues.
Low rents attracted antique dealers, record stores, and the seeds of Denver's punk and indie music scene. Skylark Lounge, Hi-Dive, and independent bookstores like Mutiny Information Cafe took root.
A monthly First Friday art walk began bringing galleries, food trucks, and thousands of visitors to South Broadway — creating a community event that now defines the neighborhood's identity.
South Broadway embraced the "SoBo" identity — craft breweries, vintage markets, tattoo studios, and independent restaurants joined the existing dive bar culture to create Denver's most eclectic entertainment corridor.
