The City of Denver began acquiring land for a civic plaza in the late 1860s, though the formal design and construction of Civic Center Park wouldn't begin for decades.
Mayor Robert Speer's 'City Beautiful' vision transformed the area between the State Capitol and City & County Building into a formal civic complex, with the park, cultural buildings, and Greek Theatre constructed.

The Greek Theatre in Civic Center Park was built in 1909 as part of Mayor Speer's beautification program. The outdoor amphitheater hosts free public events to this day.
The Voorhies Memorial colonnade and final park elements were completed in 1932, fulfilling the City Beautiful vision for a formal civic park linking Denver's major government buildings.
The Taste of Colorado festival launched at Civic Center Park in 1987 on Labor Day weekend. It grew into one of the nation's largest food festivals, drawing 500,000+ visitors annually.
