Stapleton Airport Opens

Denver Municipal Airport (later Stapleton International) opened in 1929 on the plains northeast of the city, serving as Denver's main airport for over six decades and defining the area's identity.

Aviation Hub

Stapleton grew to become one of the nation's busiest airports, handling 35 million passengers annually at its peak. The airport's runways and terminals covered nearly 5,000 acres.

Denver International Airport Opens — Stapleton Closes

When Denver International Airport (DIA) opened in February 1995, Stapleton closed overnight. The massive site — 4,700 acres — sat largely empty as redevelopment was planned.

Stapleton Redevelopment Begins

The Stapleton redevelopment project launched in 2001 as one of the largest urban infill projects in US history, with a master plan for a mixed-use neighborhood with parks, schools, and transit.

2010s

Neighborhood Matures

The Northfield shopping district opened, the A Line commuter rail station brought transit access, and thousands of families moved to what became one of Denver's fastest-growing neighborhoods.

Renamed Central Park

The neighborhood officially renamed itself from Stapleton to Central Park in 2020, acknowledging the problematic legacy of former Denver mayor Benjamin Stapleton, who had Ku Klux Klan ties.
