Union Station runs on two clocks. The Bean Whistle is a coffee kiosk in the great hall that opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays and is closed Saturday and Sunday. Mercantile Dining & Provision pairs a wine library with an artisanal market and is open on the weekend. Read together, they give a Union Station coffee plan for the weekday morning and a wine, provisions and brunch plan for the rest of the week, with the Union Station opening hours for each below.

Morning Coffee and Breakfast

The Bean Whistle is a specialty kiosk inside Union Station's great hall, serving commuters and travelers since the station reopened. It sits at 1515 Arapahoe St Ste 2-200. The Facebook page lists Monday to Thursday 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and Friday 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The kiosk is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Its 7 a.m. opening is the earliest on this list, Monday to Friday, so it is the first cup of the day in the station. The kiosk serves coffee, breakfast, brunch and dessert, and it has outdoor seating, so a cup can be carried out of the hall to an outside seat. Breakfast and dessert are served only here among the stops on this page.

The Bean Whistle is rated 4.8 of 5 across 57 Google ratings, the highest Google rating on this list. Its price level is inexpensive, the lowest on this list.

Friday is the day to watch. The kiosk closes at 12:30 p.m., an hour before its Monday to Thursday close of 1:30 p.m. Go early in the morning and plan the rest of the day around it. Anyone passing through the great hall on a commute or a trip will find the kiosk a first stop, not an afternoon one.

Wine Library, Provisions and Midday Eats

Mercantile Dining & Provision combines a New American eatery, a wine library, an artisanal market and a barista bar, at 1701 Wynkoop St #155. The wine library is the reason for the Union Station wine stop: Mercantile is the only place on this list that serves wine. Its site describes seasonal American cuisine and craft cocktails, and gives Monday to Saturday hours of 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Mercantile's full week runs Monday to Friday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday's 10:30 a.m. start is half an hour ahead of the site's 11 a.m., and Sunday closes at 2 p.m.

The market side stocks artisan cheeses, charcuterie and specialty groceries, as Denver Sam describes it. That gives the visit two shapes. One is a table at the eatery. The other is a pass through the market for cheese and charcuterie to carry along. The barista bar handles the coffee, and the eatery serves brunch.

Mercantile has outdoor seating, so a table outside is an option for a longer lunch. It takes reservations, so a planned meal can be booked ahead, and it allows dogs, so a dog can come along to the outdoor tables. It is rated 4.5 of 5 across 1948 Google ratings. Denver Sam calls it "not cheap, but worth it for a special occasion," and the listing prices it as expensive. A glass from the wine library after a browse of the market is the way to end a late-day visit.

Planning the Day by Opening Hour

Both stops are open Monday to Friday. On a weekday, begin at The Bean Whistle at 7 a.m. for coffee or breakfast at the outdoor seating. Mercantile opens at 11 a.m., and from there it takes over with lunch, a glass from the wine library or a walk through the market.

Both stops have outdoor seating and serve brunch and coffee, so either can anchor a late-morning plan. If the kiosk has closed for the day, Mercantile's barista bar serves coffee once it opens at 11 a.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, only Mercantile Dining & Provision is open, and The Bean Whistle is closed. Mercantile is also the only place on this list open every day, so the weekend plan starts there. The barista bar covers coffee, the eatery serves brunch, and the market covers provisions to carry out. On Sunday, plan around the 2 p.m. close.

Weekdays go coffee first, then wine and provisions. Weekends go straight to Mercantile. Only Mercantile on this list takes reservations, serves wine and allows dogs, so a table, a glass or a dog at the outdoor seats is arranged there.

For more places to eat before noon around the station, Brunch in Union Station covers six. For a wider loop through the center of the city, Downtown Denver Coffee, BBQ and Rooftop picks up from here.

Getting There and Parking

The two stops sit at separate addresses in the station: The Bean Whistle at 1515 Arapahoe St Ste 2-200, and Mercantile at 1701 Wynkoop St #155, both in Denver, CO 80202. The Bean Whistle has free street parking, and it is the only stop on this list with it. A weekday visit can begin with a parked car at the kiosk and carry on to Mercantile when it opens at 11 a.m.
