Denver Photography Tips
The Denver Advantage: Altitude Light
Denver's altitude means cleaner, crisper light — especially during golden hour. The thin air scatters less light, giving photos a clarity that photographers from sea-level cities notice immediately. The Rockies as a backdrop are visible from much of the city on clear days.
Golden hour is earlier at altitude
Denver sits at 5,280 feet. Sunsets and sunrises hit differently with the Rockies as your backdrop. Blue hour is especially dramatic — stay 30 minutes after sunset.
Red Rocks: arrive early
Morning light at Red Rocks (before 9am) is spectacular and uncrowded. Afternoon performances mean crowds. The Trading Post Trail gives the best angle on the formations.
Clear days after storms
After a winter storm, Denver often gets crystal clear skies. The Rockies pop with fresh snow. Union Station, the Capitol, and City Park are magical after a snowfall.
16th Street Mall at blue hour
Downtown Denver's pedestrian mall photographs best at blue hour (30 min after sunset). The city lights contrast beautifully against the dark blue sky.
Use wide angle for the Rockies
The Front Range is enormous. From City Park or Sloan's Lake, a wide angle lens captures more of the mountain backdrop behind downtown Denver.
RiNo murals: morning light
RiNo's murals face various directions. Morning light is best for Larimer and Lawrence Streets. Use Google Street View to preview before shooting.
