The City of Denver set aside land for City Park in 1882, envisioning a grand European-style public park for the rapidly growing city. Landscape architect Reinhard Schuetze designed the formal layout.
Denver Zoo was founded in 1896 when a bear cub was donated to City Park. It grew into one of the nation's top-rated zoos, now home to over 4,000 animals on 80 acres.
The Denver Museum of Natural History (now Museum of Nature & Science) opened in City Park in 1900, becoming one of the largest natural history museums in the United States.
The historic City Park pavilion and boathouse were constructed in 1927, providing a scenic gathering place for outdoor events, weddings, and community celebrations.
City Park Jazz was founded in 1986 as a free Sunday evening concert series. It became one of Denver's most beloved summer traditions, drawing thousands to the park pavilion every week.
