Capitol Hill developed as Denver's most fashionable address in the 1870s–1890s, with railroad and mining millionaires building elaborate Victorian mansions on "Millionaire's Row."

Margaret 'Molly' Brown, who would later survive the Titanic disaster, purchased her Capitol Hill mansion at 1340 Pennsylvania Street in 1894. It's now a museum — one of Denver's most visited historic sites.

As wealthy families moved to the suburbs, grand Victorian homes were subdivided into apartments. Capitol Hill became a dense urban neighborhood of renters and bohemians.
Capitol Hill became Denver's center of the counterculture movement — antiwar protests, folk music clubs, and the city's emerging LGBTQ+ community all gathered on Colfax.
The Ogden Theatre (renovated 1991), Bluebird Theater, and Fillmore Auditorium cemented Colfax Ave as one of America's great music corridors.
