Free Black settlers established Denver's first African-American community in Five Points after the Civil War, drawn by railroad work and the relative openness of a new western city.
The Rossonian Hotel on Welton Street became the only first-class hotel in Denver that accepted Black guests, attracting touring jazz and blues musicians who couldn't stay elsewhere.

Five Points became a thriving cultural capital — Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole all performed at the Rossonian and nearby clubs. The neighborhood earned its famous nickname.
